Trading backlinks operate as such. You will put your link on someone else's web page and they will then be able to list their backlink on yours. It is a link trade. But, there has been quite a bit of dispute about these types of links.

Do they perform there role to help improve your rank in the search engines? Do they damage your page ranks? Should you bother investing in them? To give you an answer to these questions, take a minute to think of both sides of the position. The bottom line is, for most site owners, is the reality that they are able of assisting you.

Some reasons why they may not be helpful. When reciprocal links first started to be employed, it was a exchange between one website owner and another. If you were involved in the home decorating business, for example, it will be rewarding to join with and have a backlink to a company that supplies windows. Both parties would benefit by reciprocal linking.

When the site owners did this, they found that their sites did in reality rank there sites better. In point of fact, it functioned so well that website owners went out and looked for more and more link trades.

There in caused the problem. Rather then doing work with other site owners to build a relationship and build a reciprocal link that benefited both websites, a lot site developers realized that they could purchase these backlinks instead of building them honestly.

Now, they did not have to go to the trouble of tempting the other sites that they would like to receive links from, instead they could simply purchase them. Even though, this isn't so bad right? The problem was that website owners were purchasing and taking advantage of thousands of reciprocal links for their website. This is altogether unnatural and it simply did not work out good for them.

But why did it change? The search engines soon detected this scheme of getting your web page to rank well. So the major search engines developed programs that would spot this technique and the fact that sites that were employing this large amount of reciprocal links in this fashion, lost there ranking in the search engines!
